What are White-Collar Crimes?

For years, white collar crimes were overlooked because they are mostly non-violent and don’t harm the general public. As time has passed and more people are affected by embezzlement, mortgage fraud, Ponzi schemes, and other white collar crimes, the federal government has taken a stand against these crimes and now they may result in serious penalties.

People charged with white collar crimes are subject to federal sentencing guidelines. There are four zones to determine the consequences of a white collar crime conviction. The four zones are organized by criminal history and offense level of the charge. Zone A criminals will only face up to six months of imprisonment. Zone D criminals can face anywhere from 15 months to life.

The federal sentencing guidelines can be confusing for many people who are unsure of their criminal record. They should understand the severity of their past crimes and the severity of the new charges. If you are charged with a crime of this nature, speaking with an experienced criminal law attorney can be beneficial.
