What to Know About New Jersey’s New Marijuana Laws

New Jersey has been working to legalize marijuana for a few years now. Recently, Governor Phil Murphy signed new laws, decriminalizing marijuana. This is leading to a lot of big changes. Read on to learn more about New Jersey’s latest marijuana laws and the other changes to look out for in the coming months.

What Do the New Laws Entail?

According to NJ.Com, the decriminalization law allows people to possess up to six ounces of marijuana without legal consequence. There is also a new law regarding underage penalties for marijuana. This new law bars police from stopping young people if they smell marijuana. Additionally, it will only allow them to give out warnings to those under the age of 21. NJ.com explains, “Instead of being arrested and fined for using the substances, young people receive warnings that escalate upon each violation: the first to themselves, the second addressed to a parent if they are younger than 18 and the third as a referral to community programs, including drug education or treatment.”

When Can I Legally Buy Weed in New Jersey?

Many people have been wondering when they will be able to legally purchase marijuana in New Jersey. This is a change that will not be made immediately. The state will need to license new dispensaries to meet public needs.

What is Happening to Those Who Have Been Arrested for Marijuana Possession?

Many people are in jail for marijuana possession. According to NJ.com, “‘Starting immediately, those who had been subject to an arrest for petty marijuana possession — an arrest that may have kept them from a job or the opportunity to further their education — will be able to get relief and move forward,’ Murphy said.” Arrests for thousands of possession cases should begin to cease.
